How to Spot Fake Black Friday Deals in Under a Minute

Not every Black Friday \"doorbuster\" is a deal. Some prices are higher than in October. Here's a quick checklist to tell real discounts from marketing.

Check it at the store

Every year, I see people buying "Black Friday deals" that were cheaper a month earlier. Retailers know shoppers are excited and rushing. Here's how to check a deal quickly.

1. Check the price history

Price tracking tools show a product's price over time. If the "sale" price matches what it's been for months, it's not a deal.

2. Watch for special models

Some TVs and electronics are made specifically for Black Friday with slightly different model numbers. They can have cheaper parts or fewer features. Compare model numbers carefully.

3. "Compare at" prices

A "was" or "compare at" price may be inflated. The real comparison is what the product actually sold for recently.

4. Bundles you don't need

Bundles can look like big savings, but if the extras are items you wouldn't buy, the deal is smaller than it looks.

5. Limited quantities

Doorbusters often have very limited stock. If it's sold out instantly, don't panic-buy a different product that isn't on sale.

What's usually a real deal

  • TVs from major brands
  • Smart home devices
  • Toys
  • Headphones and some electronics
  • Many kitchen appliances

What's often not a deal

  • Newest phones and premium gadgets, often with only small discounts
  • Furniture, sometimes cheaper in other sales
  • Products with constantly "on sale" prices

Return policies

Holiday return windows are often extended. Check the policy before buying, especially for big-ticket items.

Price adjustments

Some stores give price adjustments if an item drops further within a certain period. Keep receipts.

Where to compare

Costco and Sam's Club offer strong Black Friday bundles, especially on TVs. Amazon and Target run competitive sales across categories. Comparing across stores in a few clicks protects you from fake deals.

Verdict

Check price history, model numbers and the real recent price. If it passes those three tests, it's probably a real deal. If not, wait.
